Chiang Mai, April 27, 2025- A new study suggests that men who have erectile dysfunction can be more likely to have a heart condition, and that men who have had heart problems can get more erections. The study, which was conducted by researchers from the National Taiwan University, will be published in the March 2024 issue ofThe New England Journal of Medicine.
In the new study, a group of men who had been diagnosed with heart disease and who were taking a blood pressure drug called sildenafil (Viagra) were given a medication called nitroglycerin that had been shown to improve the condition of the heart, blood vessels, and the penis, and then were given an injection of sildenafil into the penis. Researchers also studied a group of men who had had heart problems and had been taking a nitroglycerin-based drug called amlodipine (Norvasc), which is not approved for heart conditions.
Sildenafil, which was found to be safe, is an erectile dysfunction drug. The drug is also used to treat high blood pressure and angina. But, it's been linked to heart disease and can cause death.
The study, published in theNew England Journal of Medicinein March 2024, has not been peer-reviewed. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the American Heart Association are not involved in the study.
The study was led by Professor David Hoey and Dr. Peter C. Allen, professor of medicine at the University of Auckland, and Dr. Andrew W. Wiedman, professor of medicine at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and associate director of the Research Project at the Department of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania.
The study involved more than 250 men between the ages of 18 and 65 with erectile dysfunction who were recruited from the New England Journal of Medicine.
The research team was led by Dr. John W. Hoey, professor of medicine, and co-director of the Urology Research Unit at the University of Pennsylvania.
“These findings suggest that there is a strong link between heart disease and high blood pressure,” said Dr. Hoey, who is a co-author on the study and co-author on the previous work.
Dr. Wiedman also pointed out that the new study was an observational study, meaning that the men didn't follow up with the researchers. The study was funded by Pfizer.
“The research team is interested in evaluating the association between heart disease and a particular blood vessel condition. These studies are important to understand if there are any significant differences between men who have a heart condition and men who have not,” said Dr. Wiedman.
A total of 10,500 men who had been diagnosed with heart disease and who had been taking a blood pressure drug, including nitrates, had been recruited from the New England Journal of Medicine for this study, and who were randomly assigned to take a nitroglycerin-based drug or a nitrate drug. The researchers also recruited men who had been taking a blood pressure drug, including amlodipine, to take the drug. They also recruited men who had had a heart condition.
Men who had suffered from heart disease and were taking a nitroglycerin drug for heart disease had a twofold higher chance of having a heart condition compared with men who were taking a nitrate drug, and those who had a blood pressure medication for heart disease had a threefold higher chance of having a heart condition compared with men who were taking a nitrate drug.
Men who were taking a nitrate drug had a threefold higher chance of having a heart condition compared with men who were taking a nitrate drug, and those who had a blood pressure medication for heart disease had a sixfold higher chance of having a heart condition compared with men who were taking a nitrate drug.

A British man who suffered a heart attack last year after taking Viagra tablets has been jailed for four years, a court has heard.
A 42-year-old was sentenced on Friday to two years in prison and ordered to pay £2.8million to charity for his suffering.
Judge Michael Gough said: “It was the worst time in my life. I have had very bad experiences and I’ve taken these tablets myself, but they were an absolute nightmare.”
Viagra is a prescription-only medicine for erectile dysfunction.
Mr Gough said: “This was a serious blow to my health. I’m not going to get involved in a future battle about erectile dysfunction.”
The court heard that when Mr Gough was prescribed the medicine in the early 2000s he used it for about 40 years. He suffered a heart attack in 1998 and was treated for it for five years by his GP.
He was released on condition that he did not take any further medication.
Judge Gough said he was “disappointed” with Mr Gough’s sentencing.
He added: “I’m deeply disappointed with the verdict. This is a very serious blow to my health. I’ve taken these tablets myself, but they were an absolute nightmare.”
